Eligible death and injury claims for GM compensation rise

The number of eligible death and injury claims through the General Motors claims process continues to rise, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal on May 11.

Reports revealed that there were three additional deaths eligible, in addition to the 97 deaths recently recorded, while there were 5 injuries added to the previous 179. The automaker giant created a compensation program last year for eligible victims of a particular GM defect, who either died or were injured due to the faulty ignition switches that may disengage, disabling power steering and airbags in the vehicles. A GM spokesperson stated that the deaths became eligible for compensation based on the crash information and electronic data gathered from the vehicles’ computers. People who choose to be compensated by GM cannot file a lawsuit with the same claim against the automaker in the future.
