Toyota to pay $1.2 billion settlement after federal probe

After a grueling four-year federal investigation, Toyota will be settling for $1.2 billion as a result of misinforming consumers and regulators regarding the unintentional acceleration of their vehicles, Business Week reported on March 19.

Though prosecutors already filed a criminal charge against Toyota for admitting their deliberate lapse in informing consumers, executives were spared from being charged. According to the Justice Department, Toyota already knew in 2009 that other vehicle models may possibly have the same acceleration problem that had prompted other vehicles made by the company to be recalled. Additionally, the company was charged for intentionally misinforming the public regarding the defective gas pedals that could cause sudden acceleration.
