Ford Recalls F-150 Pickup Trucks Over Defective Airbags

Ford Motor Co. announced Tuesday it will recall 144,000 F-150 pick-up trucks after receiving reports that the front airbags were deploying even if the vehicle was not subject to any type of impact.

The recall involves trucks build from November 2004 through June 2005 and sold in the 2005 and 2006 model years. Federal safety regulators are reviewing Ford’s recall plans to determine if it will fix enough vehicles with the potential for unprovoked airbag deployment. Regulators had wanted Ford to recall 1.3 million trucks, including vehicles form the 2006 model year. Officials with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are reviewing Ford’s data to decide whether the smaller recall includes enough vehicles to solve the problem.

The automaker said it was aware of 77 injuries caused by the inadvertent air bag deployment. A total of 238 incidents have been reported to the company.

Ford says that in the majority of instances, the airbag deployed within the first few seconds after ignition. There are other reports that indicate a vehicle was on a public roadway when the deployment occurred. Ford said it knows of one customer who jumped from the vehicle after an unexpected deployment that occurred in a driveway.
