Deer in June pose extra threat

While many know to pay extra attention in the fall for deer, Wisconsin drivers should be on special alert during June.

According to a warning issued today by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, June occupies the position of either most dangerous or next to most dangerous month for deer-to-vehicle accidents. Their increased visible presence can be blamed on fawns leaving their mothers and does trying to find somewhere to give birth.

Deer contribute to make deer-to-vehicle collisions just behind vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-fixed object crashes. Although this is a statewide figure, in Shawano County, deer-related collisions make up more than half of the total traffic accidents there.

County-by-county, Dane County suffers the most deer-related accidents, with 873 of Wisconsin’s total 16,338 deer-related incidents in 2009.

Police warned the public to pay heed in the evening and early morning, as these are times of high activity for deer. They suggested that, if a deer approaches the road, slowing down and blaring a car, truck, or motorcycle horn in one continuous sound should be enough to frighten the deer away from the road.
