Man to Serve 18 Months for Fatal Racine Car Accident

A man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for causing a Racine car accident that killed a four year-old boy.

According to court documents, 79 year-old Luis Zavala was sentenced to 18 months in prison for causing the March 9 crash that killed Michael Hankins. Vavala’s van struck the car in which Hankins was a passenger. Zavala was driving without a license and ha previously been told not to drive.

An investigation into the rash showed that Zavala was traveling over 40 mph when he ran a red light at Meachem Road and Druand Avenue, according to Assistant District Attorney Noah Wishau. Hankins was wearing a seat belt, but was not in a booster seat when the crash occurred.

Haskins’ family say the 18 month sentence is not enough. Michael’s step-grandfather, Donald Lester, said he was “appalled at the District Attorney’s Office for only giving this man 18 months for taking my grandson’s life.”
